...and furthermore...FURTHERMORE...

interesting article here about how some indie record labels are faring in the face of the alleged "record-industry slump" hand-wringing often cited by the RIAA and its supporters.

and you know, obvious holes in the RIAA's general argumentative stance aside, i think the main thing that frustrates me is wondering whether or not some people realise they've got a choice to listen to something that isn't being drilled into their skulls via the radio every five seconds? with the rather insidious proliferation of multimedia monopolies (although my typo of "monopolice" actually seems a bit better suited in some respects) force-feeding whatever they choose into every sense possible, is this the real problem?

i mean, if you're into the top-40 stuff, all well and good for you. the top-40 and the indie can coexist quite peacefully on the same block, and within the same record collection, even. however, it frustrates me to think that there are people who aren't aware that they've got the choice of listening to other things. my brain boggles to think there are people who believe exactly what they're told as regards all things, and who consequently don't research and question things further. such complacency is, quite simply, dangerous (and i'll just stop this rant right now and stick to my intended topic... XD).

it also seems wholly alien to me. i think everything ought to be questioned, to be poked, prodded, and examined as far as you'd care to take it; music obviously being no exception. and i realise many people aren't as obsessive about certain things as i am *coughcough*, but it does make me sad thinking (due to various conversations) some people might not even realise they've got a choice. that there's a world beyond their television screens and their radios. that if they dug a little deeper, they'd have a better idea of what the world is made of, in so many respects.

(how do you like that? i've gone from my overly-sanctimonious yoof (which i tried to squelch, but i couldn't help being snobby sometimes---had to distance myself from those Paula Abdul albums somehow, and the sneer seemed the best way...XD) to...what? some strange notion of sad consideration? just plain sadness? what? aieeee. XD)

without going into the other parts of this discussion, which i found very interesting but have nothing to add...have you heard their cover of "how soon is now?" XD i liked they synthy parts of all that she said too, well i like t.a.t.u. period, but i have to admit that most of what i like about them is trevor horn's production.

Postie Paul (although no one else called "Paul" really seems to post here...XD): with Swek, that wouldn't be an option unless the world were virtually stood on its ear, trust me---we've dug our own hole niche that wouldn't support such a thing (that and we aren't really a serious band). i don't think i'd go for it if we were, although i can't say how others in the band would feel---thing is, i used to work for a semi-indie that was in the throes of being majorly done over by the major label that was distributing it. and while i'd had some idea before that of how (most) indie labels treat their roster vs. how (most) major labels treat their roster, that made the picture even clearer. i can't blame them, and don't---but i think it does ruin a good many bands who might have gotten a bit further and knocked out some really great music had circumstances been different. although this is a bit of a silly argument really, i know---i mean, it leads to nothing more than the "what if?" game over and over again. if circumstances were different, ANYTHING could be---y'know? XD

but i found that article interesting in that it mentioned that all is not as the RIAA would have one believe---the majors may be in a slump, but they aren't everything in the music industry---just most of it. XD

i think people should like whatever they want to like, honestly---and that no one should be the Master Arbiter of Taste for everyone else. i think that's why it bothers me when i talk to people who genuinely don't realise that what they're hearing on the radio and/or seeing on TV isn't all there is. believe it or not, i've done that exact thing quite a lot recently.

and the way current radio is structured (barring college stations and other similar entities), certain songs (which companies have paid dearly for this to happen to) are played a certain number of times per day (and perhaps per hour), in constant rotation---of the same handful of songs or so. it seems like a very desperate effort to drill whatever song a company has paid the most promotional dollars for into the heads of listeners, whether they like it or not---till it reaches a certain saturation point, wherein the full airplay onslaught is scaled back.

eventually it does begin to feed on itself---people call in and request it, etc.,etc. but the way radio stations (at least here) are structured, and the way there's basically few independent stations around (most are owned by ClearChannel or Evergreen Media or a couple of other giant media companies) seems a bit insidious---here, at least. ^^

and i don't think newness makes anything any better, either. as long as it makes you happy, who cares if it's new or old? ^^

which tAtU song? "All The Things She Said"? i've discovered (thank you, Fi XD)that i rather like the synthy bits of them okay, but i really don't care for their voices at all---although they sound about a million percent better in Russian. XD i was having a discussion with a few other people about this just yesterday, and we came to the conclusion that we think they sound like angry chipmunks on helium. XD

well, i wouldn't say anywhere near all people. but i would say i've come into contact with a disturbing amount of people who really are genuinely unaware that the radio isn't presenting them with Everything Worth Hearing. i'm sure those people are aware of whatever their parents listened to as well, regardless of whether or not it Actively Sucked (according to them). XD

but it's that sort of complacency that bugs me. i think people should listen to and do whatever makes them happy, honestly---no matter what it is (and assuming it isn't hurting others ^.-). but i guess it bugs me that some people aren't aware that they've got choices beyond what's easily presented, if that makes any sense...? the people who passively consume vs. those who choose to actively consume. people who want all their choices to be made for them vs. people who research and make up their own damn minds for themselves.

i guess it just bugs me when people aren't aware, period. the music thing is a v. small issue in a gigantic sea of such issues, and i prolly didn't express myself as well as i'd have liked. hontounihontounigomenne, Beeru-sama! XD

monopolice..copyright that word...turning up on a blog by me soon....

On a serious note: If any notion of Indie ever really existed anyways , the moment it got "popular" you would see indie kids being sold stuff by the monopolice. And you can't blame the band for signing to Megabucks Label , I bet even Snek ( hehe) would , given half a chance?! As it is , I prefer to stay ensconced in my little timewarped ghetto .. [..late 80's / early 90's as you ask...] with occasional forays into the mainstream , though I quickly scurry back to my dark corner.

Though I really liked that t.a.T.u song...(eek)

Jyan, I think everybody realizes that there's music beyond what plays on the radio-- most people know that the music their parents listen to suck (1), that there's all this centuries-old stuff that nobody listens to anymore (2), and that there's all these weird sections of music isles at the store that they never walk through.

People must be aware of the *choice*-- whether or not they care enough to listen to the alternative to realize is another matter altogether.

(1) Not my parents, of course. >D
(2) "nobody" being a large number of people XD

Or is that not the point you're trying to make-- that people don't bother to listen to the alternatives? Or assume that there's no recent-and-great alternatives, that anything being made today makes it to the top 40 lists?
